Optical pumping of trapped neutral molecules by blackbody radiation.

چکیده
Optical pumping by blackbody radiation is a feature shared by all polar molecules and fundamentally limits the time that these molecules can be kept in a single quantum state in a trap. To demonstrate and quantify this, we have monitored the optical pumping of electrostatically trapped OH and OD radicals by room-temperature blackbody radiation. Transfer of these molecules to rotationally excited states by blackbody radiation at 295 K limits the 1/e trapping time for OH and OD in the X(2)Pi(3/2), v" =0, J"=3/2(f) state to 2.8 and 7.1 s, respectively.

Attractive optical forces from blackbody radiation.
Blackbody radiation around hot objects induces ac Stark shifts of the energy levels of nearby atoms and molecules. These shifts are roughly proportional to the fourth power of the temperature and induce a force decaying with the third power of the distance from the object. We explicitly calculate the resulting attractive blackbody optical dipole force for ground state hydrogen atoms. Surprising...
متن کاملBlackbody-radiation-assisted laser cooling of molecular ions.
The translational motion of molecular ions can be effectively cooled sympathetically to temperatures below 100 mK in ion traps through Coulomb interactions with laser-cooled atomic ions. The distribution of internal rovibrational states, however, gets in thermal equilibrium with the typically much higher temperature of the environment within tens of seconds. We consider a concept for rotational...
متن کاملMagnetic trapping of molecules via optical loading and magnetic slowing.
Calcium monofluoride (CaF) is magnetically slowed and trapped using optical pumping. Starting from a collisionally cooled slow beam, CaF with an initial velocity of ∼ 30 m/s is slowed via magnetic forces as it enters a 800 mK deep magnetic trap. Employing two-stage optical pumping, CaF is irreversibly loaded into the trap via two scattered photons. We observe a trap lifetime exceeding 500 ms li...

We report direct laser spectroscopy of the 1S0-3P0 transition at 265.6 nm in fermionic isotopes of neutral mercury in a magneto-optical trap. Measurements of the frequency against the LNE-SYRTE primary reference using an optical frequency comb yield 1 128 575 290 808.4+/-5.6 kHz in 199Hg and 1 128 569 561 139.6+/-5.3 kHz in 201Hg. The uncertainty, allowed by the observation of the Doppler-free ...

Modern atomic, molecular, and optical physics has advanced primarily by using known physics to devise innovative techniques to better isolate and control the atomic system, and then exploiting this nearly ideal system to achieve higher precision and discover new physical phenomena. The striking advances along these lines have been recognized by awards of Nobel Prizes to 21 individuals in this a...
